Virtual Colonoscopy is a non-invasive procedure in which computed tomography (CT) scanners are used to make virtual images of the colon. The CT scanner is a short open chamber with no enclosed tunnel and is used to take “pictures" of your abdomen. During the procedure, the colon is filled with a moderate amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), and the CT scanner is used to generate images of the colon. The images are reconstructed into a three-dimensional (3D) view, which allows radiologists to navigate your colon in computer simulation and screen for polyps. The procedure will take about 10 minutes.
Benefits and Advantages of Virtual Colonoscopy
No sedation is required and patients recover faster from the procedure.
Patients with a history of an Incomplete Optical Colonoscopy can still receive a complete colon cancer screening exam through Virtual Colonoscopy.
Quick, safe, and easy; the procedure takes only about 15 minutes and there is no risk of bleeding or colon perforation.
94% sensitivity for polyps 10mm or greater.
The complete abdominal CT will be read by a radiologist and if any other abnormalities outside your colon are present, these will be examined as well.
