Virtual Colonoscopy is a non-invasive procedure in which computed tomography (CT) scanners are used to make virtual images of the colon. The CT scanner is a short open chamber with no enclosed tunnel and is used to take “pictures" of your abdomen. During the procedure, the colon is filled with a moderate amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), and the CT scanner is used to generate images of the colon. The images are reconstructed into a three-dimensional (3D) view, which allows radiologists to navigate your colon in computer simulation and screen for polyps. The procedure will take about 10 minutes.

Benefits and Advantages of Virtual Colonoscopy

  • No sedation is required and patients recover faster from the procedure.

  • Patients with a history of an Incomplete Optical Colonoscopy can still receive a complete colon cancer screening exam through Virtual Colonoscopy.

  • Quick, safe, and easy; the procedure takes only about 15 minutes and there is no risk of bleeding or colon perforation.

  • 94% sensitivity for polyps 10mm or greater.

  • The complete abdominal CT will be read by a radiologist and if any other abnormalities outside your colon are present, these will be examined as well.
