Walter Reed Army Medical Center is now offering an in-residence intensive training course on virtual colonoscopy (VC) for military radiologists. This five-day course is designed to teach how to perform and interpret virtual colonoscopy. The course includes daily didactic lectures, technical demonstrations, clinical demonstrations, a PowerPoint lecture by Dr. J. Richard Choi, and reviews of various pertinent research publications.

The participants will complete a self-paced reading of 52 standardized VC cases, and attend 20 or more supervised clinical exam readings. At the end of the five-day course the participants will have the opportunity to intrepret at least five clinical cases with supervision. At this point, the staff radiologist will evaluate the skills learned.

After completion of this course the participants should be able to:

  • Compare advantages and disadvantages of virtual colonoscopy to conventional colonoscopy and other colon screening procedures.

  • Describe the basics of virtual colonoscopy procedure.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in using Viatronix V3D software.

  • Evaluate quality of data, based on prep and distention of colon.

  • Classify polyps based on size, shape, and location.

  • Recognize characteristics of software-produced artifacts.

  • Interpret clinical virtual colonoscopy exams.

  • Indicate appropriate recommendation based on findings.

Upon satisfactory fulfillment of the course requirements, participating radiologists will receive a Certificate of Completion.
